... a machinery screw-up??    https://www.facebook.com/photofbid=10165471742793069&set=pcb.10165471743323069

I have precious little experience with racoons, and even less with grain bags .... The farmer [west-central SK] is sticking with racoons, though others offer a more plausible explanation [at least to me] in the comments.

May be an image of combine and silo

But, but, but, more importantly, in the field across the back lane I noticed some scat that I initially attributed to a bear ... though instead of chokecherry pits it was undigested canola seed.  Now I'm thinking probably a racoon??

Holes in the plastic due to varmints, spilling out the grain? Who knew?
(never mind the fauna interest, do you notice the equilibrium attained by the spillage weight vs. the weight of the bagged pressure?  I'm sure yer auld physics students would scratch their collective heads on this conundrum....)

I'm going with "angle of repose" [which may well be related to spillage equilibrium.... to combine 2 of your factors   ;) ].

In any event .... from the broken record dept:  "... others offer a more plausible explanation [at least to me] in the comments."   For example: "... are you sure. I've seen baggers snag on one side and they stretch it thin in spots tear in others every 2ft with every fold. The thin spots look like vertical claw marks." and, " .... I doubt racoons would be that meticulous."

There's some effort toward recycling: https://cleanfarms.ca/materials/grain-bags/   I have no idea about it's extent, effectiveness, the financial end of it, etc.

One of my friends/neighbours  got burned quite seriously some years back.  He was burning some of the plastic used to cover their pit silage and a gust of wind whipped some of it onto him.  [Long slow recovery/rehab, but he made it. yes ]

The Mennonites and Amish back in Ontario used to burn the rye straw after harvesting. Methinks township bylaws were introduced to ban such activity.

I thought those holes were too evenly spaced. We put shelled corn in bags. But for some reason they don't put soybeans in those bags around here. ( too expensive? )

I suspect you  might  mean the other "cheap."

Google Ai tells me: "The price of agricultural grain storage bags ranges from approximately CA$1,147.99 to CA$2,813.99, depending on the size, length, and supplier. [1]

This

combine headers - NEW HOLLAND - PDF Catalogs | Technical Documentation | Brochure

and this

Augers Conveyors by Farm King Westfield and Convey-All from Altona Farm

is what's wrong (?) with that.

I was looking thru a 12-year-old  National Geographic earlier today.... learned that the US produces about  30,000,000 MRE rations per year ... the illustration looks like they're packaged in some sort of plastic.

And furthermore and moreover, I WANT PLASTIC DRINKING STRAWS!!  [Especially for milkshakes!!] wink

Edit: A good-sized combine would fill one of those non-plastic bins about every 20 minutes.   On small farms, back in the day (?),  the "farmer" typically operated the combine and the wife and/or kids did the hauling.  Bring back the goodle days?!?!?!

In that banks set our regulatory policy* [politicians defer to "experts"] I suspect their glee doesn't fluctuate all that much.

[In case it's not apparent, I'm no economist.]

* we look after #1. [I'm not saying it's "bad," just giving my observation.]

Don't know anything 'bout canola. Cept for the song: "Mr. Toronto man. Stay away from my door. . . . . . "

Looks like every day's a school day.  I was unaware of ^^.  yes

Google AI tells me that US plants 3 million acres to canola [85-90% in ND].

But more importantly, I see the "land of rape and honey" [finally?? / thankfully??] passed into history about a decade back:   https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/saskatchewan/tisdale-sask-rethinks-its-land-of-rape-and-honey-slogan-1.3042212

Rapeseed oil has to come from somewhere?
Ah yes ND. From the oil patch to Fargo, I love her so.
Mr. Toronto Man..

Just so you know, this is called Saskatchewan 1881

Today, for some reason [or no reason?] Facebook "informed" me of the world's largest metal grain bin circa 2010-2011.

So naturally (?) I had to check with Google AI to see what's happened in the last 1.5 decades.

The largest free-standing (free-span) metal grain bin in the USA (and the world) is a 2.2 million to 2.25 million-bushel capacity grain bin designed and manufactured by Sukup Manufacturing Co. [1, 2, 3]

Key Specifications

  • Location: Golden Grain Energy ethanol plant in Mason City, Iowa
  • Capacity: 2.2 to 2.25 million bushels
  • Diameter: 165 feet
  • Height: 155 feet 7 inches at the peak (110 feet at the eave)
  • Structure: 30 rings tall, built without internal center support columns ("free-span") [1, 2, 3]                         ==============================================================================                                                     A few years back, one of the b-i-g farmers around here was cropping about 14,000 acres [including the field across the back lane].  At 70 bushels / acre he could farm for 2 1/4 years with just that one bin.  [E.&O.E.]
  • Crazee I tells ya, just crazee!!

Dunno whether or not ^^ option got any/much consideration.   The new slogan is: "Opportunity Grows Here."

Edit: But to my everlasting consternation (?) I first tried [unsuccessfully] to fit the additional "T" into rape and then honey. sad
