I have just gotten word that master inlay artist and banjo neck maker Douglas Lee Unger has passed away following complications from a stroke.

I have known Doug since 1968 and have always appreciated his sharing of instrument building and inlay techniques. He helped me with finishing my first lap dulcimer (age 14) that got me started down the music industry's peculiar market niche I occupy.

Wishing the Unger family peace.

Sad news, indeed. Doug Unger contributed to excellence with the banjo and its history in so many ways. Thank you for sharing it, Bob.

One of my favorite people and one of the finest inlay artists and engravers the world has ever known. A true character.

He made some repairs to one of my banjos and I suppose because I'm an architect and the same age, he mailed me a couple dozen photos of his house, the unheated backyard summer studio he had built, some paintings and inlay work and a description of how architecture had played a roll in his life and work. He was a huge talent and an instant friend.

Doug’s peerless craftsmanship inspired those of us who were part of Stewart-MacDonald in the banjo years. We will miss his wit and friendship.
