Hello friends. So, I'm looking at starting a new banjo build. I have the tone ring and flange, and I will be buying a rim shortly. Problem is, the guy who does the rims will need me to send my hardware out to him for fitting, likely costing me about 50 bucks shipping. That said, I do possess a router table. Is it feasible to use the router table with maybe a flush-trim bit to cut away at the rim to fit the flange and tone ring? Thanks,
Easy

I hope so, as I'm planning to try this myself. My thought is to make a jig out of MDF with a convex curve the diameter of the rim, drill a hole at the edge of it for a router bit (straight, not flush- trimming), and use that clamped to the table as a guide.

What sort of tone ring are you fitting?

I'll be following to see what others say.

Don’t forget a test run. Maybe a trash rim if you can find.
I have no real advice or I’d be doing one. I’d think you want final fit by hand with sand paper.

I use a router table for this in the way John Yerxa describes. I have pieces of wood that I use as fences with 10, 11, and 12" curves cut into them, and it works quite well for tone rings. For flanges you might need a taller fence, as that would be a deep cut.
