I believe every time a banjo is disassembled it stands a chance to sound different upon reassembly. While I tend to think gold plating takes a slight edge off the brilliance, a more significant difference is seen by proper fitment. Heel to pot and tone ring fitment and head tension (and type) are larger issues in my view. I think that’s why banjos are intriguing, all the little things add up to make or break. And it really takes experience to evaluate what to do and not. Just my opinion though, we all have our own beliefs. I have gold plated ones and nickel ones.

And I can reassemble a banjo with the co-rods definitely the same as they were before and get different action and height of fretboard above the head.
