Nobody's answering your head-size question because there isn't a simple answer to it. The diameter of the head is just one of dozens of banjo-design variables which affect the tone, and every one of them interacts with all of the others. All else being equal, a larger head ought to favor lower frequencies and attenuate the higher ones (a "darker" sound), but you never know.... I've played some 11" banjos (strung with gut or nylon) that had big fat tone all the way down to low G.
