Hi everyone,
A little while ago I posted about a 1965 Framus (Rhythmus model, according to one use) that I recently bought. Thank you to everyone who chimed in.
The original head was cracked, and I'm getting ready to install a new one. My two questions are:
1. What head size do I need?
2. What crown height do I need?
3. Is the head I need available in the same matte gray the original head was?
I've consulted Bob Smakula (who of course I trust, but he didn't see the banjo in person), a local luthier (who saw the banjo in person), and Google searches, and I've read slightly different things. I also did my own measurements.
I'm hoping to come up with a definitive answer so I can purchase a head and install it with confidence.
All relevant info is below, and I've attached photos as well. Thank you for any and all help.
Bob: 11-1/16", any crown height
Luthier: 11", high crown
Google searches: 11", low crown
My measurements:
Pot diameter (outside edge): 11"
"Tone ring" (metal strip inserted into pot) diameter: 10-3/8"
Original head inside edge of flesh hoop diameter: ~11-3/16"
Inside edge of tension hoop diameter: 11-1/8"

Thanks for the advice. Can you provide any context on how you came to your conclusion? Is it based off my measurements, your prior experience with Framus banjos, or something else? I'm just trying to better understand how banjos work.

I have owned two, and worked on many more. It is just the way they are made and not designed to take a high crown head.
