I am not looking at the myriad of apartments, duplexes and dorm rooms that came and went during that time. These are three real family-sized houses, all built between 1957 and 1959, all with oak hardwood floors and rock-lath and plaster walls. The first,, built for my parents, is 2,400+ sq.ft. with 5 bedrooms (one above the garage). The second, which my wife and I owned when in grad school, is about. 2,100 sq.ft. with a full, partially finished basement, three bedrooms plus a basement room for a bedroom or study. Finally, the house we bought 40 years ago, where I still live. 2,200 sq.ft., three bedrooms plus family room. All three houses have two bathrooms. All the lots have trees. … There was no plan of getting a certain style house when my wife and I found our first one. Its similarity to the one of my teen years was a coincidence. The current one probably reflects its predecessor because we had a sense of what to expect. Spending 40 years in the same house in California has distinct tax advantages because of limits on the annual increases in assessed taxable value. So even though I rattle around in a place too big for me and my cat, I’ll stay as long as I’m physically able.
