The gov says it is the fastest construction project in the country (Bwahahahahahaha) 2030? MAYBE if they are lucky. Most days there is no one doing anything out there, they are still driving pylons and are not even close to completing THAT. Now the official word is this; The Francis Scott Key Bridge rebuild project is currently budgeted at up to $5.2 billion, more than triple its initial $1.7 billion estimate, after the state parted ways with its lead contractor over cost disputes.

Way to go Marylandastan. It has caused real traffic problems, just on the other side of the once there bridge are massive Amazon warehouses.

On a bridge-building side-story. This Summer they completed a bridge project in Pittsburgh in record time on a major artery by building the new bridge beside the old bridge, demoing the old bridge, then sliding the new bridge into place. The 376 parkway into Pittsburgh was closed for only 17-days during the process.

Of course, it didn't span a large waterway.

Cape Cod, where I now live, didn't start out as an island, but it technically is now: it's completely surrounded by water, owing to the Cape Cod Canal. There are two highway bridges crossing the Canal, and an elderly railroad bridge. Those are the only ways to get to Cape Cod unless you swim, fly or take a boat.

Those bridges were built in the mid-1930s. They took two years to build. They have two (narrow) lanes in each direction, undivided. Yes, that's a problem - and on a very regular basis.

The are being replaced, and construction on ONE of them has started. I may actually be able to cross it within my lifetime, but the target is roughly an eight-year build. I doubt I'll ever cross the replacement for the one I regularly use, unless it's in a hearse.
