There is a massive data center being build about 5-7 miles from my house as the crow flies. The house I sold 3 years ago, was 1.5 miles from the site.

It's amazing to watch the construction, hundreds of workers during shift changes, the local police have to block and direct traffic on the 4-lane Hwy 176, so workers can get in and out during shift change.

A few months ago an acquaintance told me his son had to quit his job because it was too stressful. His son drives concrete trucks for a living. How on earth can driving a concrete truck be stressful? I asked ... well, apparently, they are pouring concrete 24 hours a day and the trucks must be sequenced and scheduled on a precise clock or else it messes up the pours, or something like that. So his son was delivering concrete at all hour of the day, working 12+ hour shifts. Holy crap.

The local data center is a $2 - $3 billion investment here. There is some controversy I haven;t really kept up with, some being it bypassed the local planning commission, apparently is not being inspected in the traditional way, among other stuff I keep hearing.

The main concerns I have are 1) noise. I'll be pretty pissed if I can hear that thing where I live; 2) air pollution. The center will generate its own electricity with natural gas. That's a LOT of carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide gonna be released in the immediate area. Not thrilled about that

And, lastly, no one is pointing out the obvious, that these data centers are hard unprotected targets in any eventual attack on the US. We are seeing drone technology elsewhere on earth that can deliver bombs 2,000 miles inland, so these data centers are all unprotected targets for some crazed nation-state or insane narcissistic billionaire (I can name a few) who might feel frisky someday. Take out the data centers, you take down the country.

Not to say one needn't  be prepared for all eventualities, but at some time into the future, is it more likely that that a data center would be "taken out" internally ... i.e. with control/disruption of the "data," or by a conventional military "strike"?

Re. pouring concrete, I think that slipform pouring has been around for quite a while. In any event I figure it's somebody other than the drivers  doing the scheduling/sequencing, so it would still be relatively stress free*.... individual thresholds to such things notwithstanding.

I asked Google AI about such matters and one of the points it came up with is: Infrasound and Low-Frequency Hum: Unlike high-frequency traffic noise, low-frequency hums (<20 Hz) from large industrial fans or gas turbines bend around physical barriers and can be physically felt as pressure or vibration rather than just heard.  [hums can bend and be felt as pressure??  ...I think I'd best stick to trying to "figure out" things on the banjo. sad ]

* Says the guy whose truck driving was primarily on a small farm .... a 1 T. grain truck, or a bus that had been converted to a round bale hauler.

My BIL is a concrete engineer who got a contract to pour a hockey rink, which had to be one continuous slab. The pour had to be constant over several days, and yeah, he was very stressed about that job, but he got it done. He was the one awake around the clock, scheduling the trucks which were lined up around the block.
As for data centers, I repeat: if they were an asset to the community then there would not be all of these back room deals being made with the result that when the public finds out about it we are told that it's a done deal and we can't stop it. No, if they were a boon to the local community then folks would be clamoring to host the next massive data center and politicians would brag about bringing them to your area. That is not what is happening.
