This guy was only trying to do something positive here! And a few of you were willing to throw him under the bus!

At the very least he’s owed an apology!

I also wrote to BNL before I started scanning the magazines, to let them know my intent, and offered to share my efforts with them and only them. I got no pushback or concerns at all. Seems to me, that's about as above board as one can get.
My question wasn't "who wants access?" And never will be. My question was "does anyone know a way to create a master index?"
Not one of you made the slightest effort to address my question.
Since the majority of you have assumed I'm a cyber-criminal, and I know I'm not, I'm ignoring any responses from here on out.
I see why so many people stop contributing to the hangouts.

In fairness, it's a somewhat odd question and I think it's the tongue-in-cheek suppositions that might lead someone to misunderstand your intent.  Not to mention -- why bother creating a website and paying for hosting if the intention isn't to share it publicly?  If it's for you and you alone -- simply upload your scanned documents to a cloud drive.. you can get to it from any device, mobile or otherwise with the directory browser effectively serving as an index.

That said, the original question (if I'm understanding correctly) is a basic web development question, but one that cannot be answered without understanding your hosting service, web environment and storage infrastructure.  Beyond that lie some ever bigger challenges -- ensuring the backend files are properly secured and frontend password protection is implemented safely.  All of it is pretty far out of scope for us banjer players!

Greetings to All!

Save your time and energy.

Can’t say that I I blame him!

Well, you're right, and I'm sorry.

In my self-defense (or at least by explanation), your careful use of "hypothetical" to describe the project gave me the impression you were being sensitive to the potential copyright implications of the work you were doing. And your request for how to make it searchable gave me the impression it was to make it searchable by others.

And since you came here to ask that -- rather than in a tech forum where people wouldn't care at all about the content, let alone banjo content -- I got the impression you were asking here because you wanted the banjo community to know you had scanned all of Banjo Newsletter and one day it might all be searchable.

That my assumptions were incorrect does not mean they were without basis. Maybe faulty basis. But still basis.

Instead of asking here -- a demonstrably non-tech-savvy community -- how to create a full-text-searchable index of password protected scanned material, why not just ask Google? Here's the answer I get when I ask Google how to create a hypelinked (content searchable) index of material I have scanned and stored online/in the cloud behind password protection.

The short answer is: You need a system that maps your files to clickable links without exposing the secure files themselves to public search engines. You can build this using cloud-native hubs, spreadhsheet based indexes, or private wikis.

For the how-to, cick the link.

Good luck.

Technically, any copies of copyrighted printed works (even only for personal use) is infringement (with exception of fair use limited reproduction for personal use etc.). This includes digitizing.

I would not want to recommend one do any form of this, just like I would not recommend anyone commit any violation.

The real motive of my reply to this is to point out how out of control copyright protection is in the US. I believe that the terms are so long that it locks up work (and progress) well past any monetary return for the vast majority of works.

The real problem is the subject of the OP. Physical copies of the BNL have pretty much no "value". I have recently seen several sets (not always complete) offered for the cost of shipping, sometimes with no takers. I personally turned down a set since it is outside of my personal banjo interest.

That said, the BNL has unmeasurable cultural and historical value. Access to them would be of HUGE value to any new player of bluegrass (and to a lesser extent "old time"). But there they sit, locked in copyright. And unless you want stacks of old dusty, yellow paper piled around your house, there is no way to read them.

And that is a problem.

Back to the OP, I am sorry you did not get the answer you were looking for. I am personally all for digitizing banjo documents and I put my money and time where my mouth is. I have been tirelessly scanning public domain banjo documents to the tune of thousands and thousands of pages. And I have hundreds of pounds yet to scan.

Most recently I was on the fence about scanning the 1960s and early 1970s Vega catalogs. These fell into the abandoned area when Galaxy Trading crumbled. Otherwise, I stick to pre 1930 or earlier.

Hey Ken,

I'll try.....

But I think he's washed his hands of anything to do with this forum!

Well.... you can give your opinion without accusing a guy of being a lawbreaker!

He basically wanted feedback and technical assistance on an idea. What he got was a lecture in copyright law and basically accused of thievery!

To set the record straight....

He was asking for IDEAS not opinions!

Your post is an attempt to make those folks who were accusatory....feel better.

That's not fair!

Ken,

I was very surprised that you hit the like button on this post! This sentence does not deserve a "like" from anyone! It is misleading and certainly misrepresents what the OP was asking for.

I have read and appreciated many of your responses here on BHO. Your posts are interesting, meaningful and worthwhile. Moreover, you always seem to be fair in responding to others. With all due respect....you dropped the ball this time. You can run for cover until "the cows come home." However, that doesn't change the fact that the OP (in this case, anyway) wasn't given a fair shake.

Mark,

I understand your position and appreciate the comment.

I don't think I attacked the OP personally. I don't believe I ever called him a thief or used any personally pejorative language. Yesterday I explained my interpretation of his original post and acknowledged my interpretation was wrong. That's not seeking cover. That's owning up to what I said.

I also said in my very first post: "If they hypothetically did this for their own hypothetical use and no one knew, they'd probably get away with it..." OP could have come back right away and said "Yeah, that's what I'm doing."

I jumped to the conclusion he was talking about posting this stuff for others to access. I was wrong. I replied publicy that I'm sorry for that. I sent him -- without elaboration -- the link to the answer on how to create the index he asked about.

I liked Steve's comment because he succinctly addressed what happens here all the time. To me, it's inconsequential that Rob asked for advice and not opinion. Steve's point is when anyone asks or posts anything here, the responses quite often go in directions not expected or wanted by the poster. That happens. I misinterpreted the OP's post and so I went off in a wrong direction. I've run out of ways to acknowledge it.

At this point, there's nothing else I can do, but remain on the receiving end of criticism for what I posted.

Putting up for free what BNL sells would harm the market I would think.

Therefore, when someone gives away free Banjo Newsletters... they are harming the market?

Giving an issue of BNL away doesn't require copying it and therefore copyright doesn't come into play...

The OP can achieve what he is setting out to do in Adobe Acrobat PDF.

He doesn't need it to be on the internet.

Lastly this is the internet, if one can't take the heat, one should remove themselves from the kitchen, so to speak.

Cannot even imagine why someone would come here expecting or looking for heat.

Most assuredly, plenty of other places on the internet where you can find that....if you're looking for it! This forum is one of the last vestiges of civility and polite discourse. Most folks get tired of the "grow a thick skin " or "get out of the kitchen " mentality!

In the case of this topic..... the OP was caught completely off guard with what transpired. In hindsight, I'm quite certain he would have preferred to take his query elsewhere!

LESSON 1:

The Banjo Hangout is a place where a simple request for information can easily devolve into assumptions and allegations and criticisms that an OP never envisions.
