I have a Clawhammer version in the newest tabs section. I knew Dave Guard when He was in Hawaii in '57 and they were playing in then I think...Dave was an incredible Man--born and raised in Oahu / "Other Island"? Hawaii...Jack p.s. The Weavers and Kingston released it pretty much at the same time as Chuck has posted....But the Kingston Trio made it the hit it became

Learn something new every day! This was always one of my favorite Beach Boys songs, and I just assumed they had written it…

Yeah, Tim,, go for it…. I think most bands throw in a few out of the bluegrass box to attract new audiences.
Carl Sandurg somewhat popularized the song by including it in his American Songbag back in 1927. Pretty much all the well-known recordings follow his version.
