I purchased this used open back banjo in the mid 90s. I have NO idea who made it or when it was made. My son will end up with it when I cross over to the promised land however until then, any help in identifying the maker and approximate year made would be nice.

I believe Dixie banjos were made by Gretsch.
It's the only one I ever seen and cannot find pictures anywhere online. Initially I thought maybe it was an old Sears an Roebuck. I'll research Gretch and try to narrow down the year of that's what it is. The rod on the back is numbered. Not that that means a whole lot.
Curious, what made you think it was sold by Sears and Roebuck?
Gretsch is the likely maker. The "brand" might be a private label of a jobber.
Compare the headstock shape and the serial number size and font to photos of Gretsch New Yorker banjos from the 1960s. Probable maker. I have seen these made by Gretsch with no name, no fingerboard (frets installed directly in neck) but serial numbers and drum wrap (Gretsch made drums) on the the front of the headstock.
