Ball bearings!
The "tone ring" in Frank Reino banjos made by Bacon generally consists of a Waverly E2 tension hoop that has been machined down to about half of its typical depth resting upon a circular series of Bacon resonator mounting bolts which had been machined lengthwise to result in a squared edge and then screwed into the top of the wooden rim. There are no ball bearings involved.
