I'd say yeah, it's definitely a real banjo. Doesn't look like AI to me.

Well, the resonator is definitely not Gibson. Hard to say about the rest. That's not a Gibson stain pattern on the back of the neck. It would take a LOT of photos to give you an educated opinion.

If it sounds good and plays well, make an offer on it as a “parts banjo” for use as a workinng banjo—not a pseudo-investment real Gibson.

Could it be a pre-war pot with a good neck that was put on by some luthier years ago.

That tone ring is a post war Gibson 4 hole arch top.

do the 2 i's lineup in the words workmanship and will line up?
does it have a FON number inside the rim anywhere ?
looks like a good rim and its for sure an old 4 hole archtop ring ,, so that would be 1954 to 1964 on the ring.

 

looks like someone built a banjo around an old ring and rim  ...

sorry i forgot they didn't use  the mastertone decals in the late 50s and early 60s  or i don't recall seeing one.
