Hi everyone,
I wanted to share a personal project I’ve been working on with the old-time classic "Old Joe Clark".
Instead of translating the traditional American verses, I decided to write completely original lyrics in Spanish, bringing the story to a local setting here in Southern Spain. I titled this version "El Viejo Juan" (Old John).
The song tells the story of an old man who leaves the city with just his boots, a piece of bread, and his old dog. They head south, passing through iconic landmarks like Despeñaperros and the olive groves, sleeping under the stars. Along the journey, he undergoes a mystical transformation, realizing his deep connection with nature—his legs turn into roots and branches sprout from his hands. Eventually, he returns to his hometown square where his physical body rests, and a giant oak tree grows in his place, making his spirit universal.
It was a lot of fun blending traditional banjo rhythms with a local storytelling vibe!
