Quite some time ago I purchased a PAIGE banjo capo. In time the black plastic sleeve deteriorated and fell apart. I fitted a 'shubb' replacement sleeve. It was a bit loose so I had to add some tape to the bar. It worked ok, but I felt it was a bit cumbersome and it also tended to turn 90 degrees when being positioned over the strings.
I replaced it with surgical tubing which worked much better but tightening the thumbscrew was getting a bit of a problem.
The 'padding' on the clamp bar was rather thin being heat shrink tubing. I decided to glue a leather strip to and it is works way better now.

I use the barrel of a ballpoint pen. Some of them feel “softer” than others. I like the “softer” ones.

There are ballpoint pens and ballpoint pens. Not sure there is a uniform tube size. The ones I have here are too small to fit the bar.
I've not used it in this application, but have sometimes added padding of some sort or another inside the heat shrink before shrinking it.

On the paige, it is extremely difficult (if not impossible to remove the back bar with the heat shrink. Its far easier to glue the leather to it. No one will see it.
