Looks like a "screen door"rod, that helps stabilaze the door or keep the door from sagging , the coulping nut has right hand threads & left hand threads on the other end. Also used in cheep asian banjos, bottle cap versions.
Yea, a hardware item, I have one hanging on my wall I was going to use on an inexpensive banjo project.

Take your banjo to the hardware store and see what they have. They have turnbuckles and reducers and hanger studs and all kinds of stuff you’ve never even heard of. A lot of banjo parts weren’t made for banjos, they are just hardware that banjo companies use. I added a second co-rod to my Goodtime by just using threaded rod and a couple nuts and washers.

They are available in the UK and they do international shipping but I dread to think of the cost of that to New Zealand.
