Hello all! I’m looking to begin the process of listing my used Nechville Classic LC for sale. I purchased it used from a friend who bought it new from Nechville around 2012. I live in NY, in a very non-banjo heavy area. I’ve never attempted to sell an acoustic instrument of such high value and I’m somewhat at a loss of where to start. It’s obviously a wonderful banjo from a reputable manufacturer. Not exactly a beginner’s banjo. And not exactly a common style, either. I play an Ome now that I’ve fallen in love with, and I’d love to part with this Nechville and use that sale to purchase a used Martin guitar. Anyway… any & all advice on how/where to start listing would be highly highly appreciated!!
You don't say where you are in New York, but if Rochester isn't too much of a haul for you, you could probably consign it at Bernunzio Uptown Music. Highly respected operation.
Lark St Music in Teaneck NJ, just over the George Washington bridge, is well known for offering fine quality used instruments to the NYC market.
If you're in northeast NY, you should also check out the Music Emporium in Lexington MA who sell good quality used instruments, although currently their market skews toward open back old time banjos more than bluegrass. But they don't get many Nechvilles, so who knows?
You could also put your banjo here on the BHO Marketplace which has a wide viewership.
Also Vintage Instruments on S Broad St in Philly deals in fine used banjos. Also Turtle Hill Banjos in Maryland.
All of these are on line.
Usually if just want to outright sell your banjo to the shop, they offer your roughly half of what they think they can retail it for. If you consign it with them, you get to keep around 80% of their sales price.
In addition to the consignment options Dick mentions, Retrofret in Brooklyn (who I’ve used and whose service is excellent) and Elderly Instruments in Lansing, Michigan are respected businesses.
Bernunzios has a D 28 for sale. its a 1971 that has had a neck reset done on it and is missing the heel cap.. but the guitar looks good .
now the 70s and above have the east indian rosewood not the brazilian. but i have play several that sounded really good.
they are asking 2495.00 for it.....
if you are close to them it may be worth driving up there and taking your banjo with you.

Ithaca Guitar Works and Jake's Main Street Music might also take banjo consignments if those are closer to you (love Bernunzio though).
If you would like to try selling it yourself: when I've sold banjos before, I usually list both on the marketplace here and then on Reverb at a slightly higher price since the fees are higher there, and always include a video sound sample on YouTube. The big downside of DIY is needing to pack the instrument yourself, which is usually a good workout for me and requires copious amounts of bubble wrap around the headstock + taking up any extra space in the shipping box.
No judgment, it could have been a 1st day for a nervous newbie, but a couple months ago I walked over to Ithaca guitar works to check out a used banjo and the guy could only ID a new Ome, couldnt tell the used one from a Siearra
