67bpm (goal is 85). Been playing for about two months (first month was doing scruggs style), working on this piece for 2 weeks ish.

Tuned down to open F. Recorded on a potato.

Tab here: banjohangout.org/tab/browse.as...l&v=29448

Goldtone AC12 with nylgut "classic banjo" strings, minstrel bridge, no knot tailpiece.

Two months?  Two weeks on the tune?  Pretty darn good.

Very musical.  Steady rhythm.   Balanced tone on the strings.

Did you write the tab, or is it by someone else?  I'll have a comment on that too, but first need some perspective.

Yes, I borrowed the melody but added my own filler basically. Feedback on that is welcome as well as it's my first attempt at cooking my own.

I don't want to get too complicated.  Yet will put this down here, and you can save for later.

It will help the learning and the timing with the metronome to put the tablature in the timing of the melody.  Can do this by singing the words to  yourself.

For example, "You are my SUN -- shine."

SUN should be the first beat, and "you are my" are the pickup notes.   But "SUN" in the tab appears on the 4th note of the first measure, the open 2nd string.  Normally, the metronome would be clicking on SUN, but here it is clicking on "You."  You are doing well in keeping pace with the metronome,  yet you may feel that the clicks are off a bit.

The tab timing in the last measure is off a bit, and that is likely the result of how the first measure is written.

A bit complicated for words.  If you heard it, you'd hear the difference right away.  Coordinating the  tab vs metronome click is a common learning point for new players.   I am not at all suggesting that you change the way you are playing this tune, at this time.

For now, just keep going.  There's a time to keep doing the things that are going well, and a time to review, and we're in the "keep doing" part now, building on what you're doing well.

Again you're doing exceptionally well for the time you've been playing, including creating your own arrangement and playing with a metronome.  Many new players don't get in this shape for a year.

Hope this helps.

I taught myself two finger during Covid. I go by foot taps for timing and the first foot tap is the second word "are." This musescore.com/user/13881501/sc...6k1writes it out and it would be good to learn music hieroglyphics, timing, what all the pauses are etc. besides just the notes. Fill-ins I just dance between the first and fourth strings. If you have a song you want to learn, write it out and underline the foot taps. Some words may have two or three taps after them before there are more words. You are doing OK, keep at it! banjered

That makes sense and explains what I've seen in some other tabs that I thought was obtuse.
