My homemade tailpiece allows break angles anywhere between 18 1/2and 0 degrees, with 2 1/2 being the lowest playable with a normal bridge. The August entry near the top of my banjo Web page has descriptions of the physics, sound measurements, played music samples, and a calculation of the effects over the imaginable range of bridge masses.
These are the played samples for three representative break angles: (They're melody snippets from Serenity Song, a great song by Benny Bleu; I'm pretty sure it's the lyrics that make it an audience favorite.)
18 1/2 degrees, 10 1/2 degrees, and 2 1/2 degrees.
