I've been picking banjo in the jam band now for a few years. Over that time I've taken a crack at clawhammer a time or two, watching online videos by various clawhammer experts, but nothing that stuck. A few months ago I found a series of clawhammer lessons called, Banjo and a Beer by a fellow in the UK named Ben Dorning. He created a site called Banjo Adventures.
I had good success with Banjo and a Beer, which was pretty much a beginners course of study. I really like Ben's style of teaching. When I finished the free series, I bought his Path of the Hobo course and have been working on that for a few weeks. With that course he actually sends you a spiral bound workbook/diary to guide you through the online videos.
Anyway, I've worked my way through the bum-ditty and working on finding melodies. I'm looking forward to drop thumb. I've been steady with sticking to the lessons and doing all the exercises online with him, not skipping over anything. I just thought I would bring it to people's attention. If you want to learn clawhammer, it is working for me.
