... spoiler alert: apparently not cattle rustling in the conventional sense, but ???
In east-central Saskatchewan. 197 head sounds like it took more than a couple of hours and maybe more than one person??
"On July 6, Livestock Services of Saskatchewan received a report of altered cattle brands at a farm located in the RM of Martin.
An investigation was conducted by Moosomin RCMP, Saskatchewan RCMP’s Livestock Investigator, and Livestock Services of Saskatchewan. As part of the investigation, 197 head of cattle were inspected. Investigation determined that 99 head of cattle carried an altered brand being applied over-top of the original brand. The remaining 98 were branded fraudulently with a new brand.
As a result of further investigation, 52-year-old Kelly Stephen from the RM of Martin, was charged with single counts each of altering a brand on cattle, and fraud over $5,000.
"Saskatchewan RCMP recognizes the important economic value of livestock to producers and rural communities across the province," stated Cpl. Owen Third, Saskatchewan RCMP's Livestock Investigator. "This investigation demonstrates our continued commitment and partnership with Livestock Services of Saskatchewan to thoroughly investigating livestock crime and protecting Saskatchewan’s agricultural sector."
Stephen is scheduled to appear in Moosomin Provincial Court on Sept. 15."
Several decades back there was an uptick in rustling one summer. One of the old time ranchers mentioned on a radio phone-in program that he'd like to get hold of the perpetrator(s) and, ".... take him/them out behind the barn and give him/them a lesson in democracy."
