Acetone….but it will also dissolve the finish . Try dropping it from the end of a toothpick.

I find a blowtorch does the trick. It's my go to whenever I have a banjo issue.

First, thank you for your replies. I considered all of these, but was afraid I was nuts. Now that I know others have boldly gone where I feared to tread, I will try it....with great care.

Keep your eyes on this space for a used Sierra for sale cheap, with "minor smoke and cosmetic damage."

Aradobanjo suggests what I would do. Heat will break down the glue bond, and you should be able to grab the peg with pliers and wiggle it out.

CA cures to acrylic plastic with a pretty low melting point. I'd take a soldering iron in one hand, glove the other, and wiggle once the metal body is hot to the touch. The lower the temperature you can get it to release, the less likely you are to damage the neck finish.

The soldering iron, as others mentioned, is about the safest method you can use.

I have used a blowtorch in the past. Masked everything with foil and tape. Worked, but not for the faint hearted.

The soldering iron if you have one would be the best method. Didn’t think of that back when….

Super glue is very brittle. Before I'd apply heat, I'd try giving it a few gentle(!!) taps in a few directions with a small hammer, cushioning and directing the blows with a small block of wood. Unless that peg is exceptionally well fitted to the hole, and/or an excessive amount of thick-gel CA was used, I'd expect that to break the glue bond quite easily.

I might need to take out a 5th string tuner that I glued in place with hide glue. I won't know for sure until the banjo is stringed and used for a while. I made a decision a while back that might cause me to have to replace the 5th string tuner. A friend suggested to that he could file away the fin and put grooves on it. Looking back this was a bad decision. So my question is ! How do I steam the tuner glue without also steaming the fretboard that is close by ?

I dunno ....... with a soldering iron?

Hide glue is nearly as brittle as CA, and doesn't stick to metal well at all. See what I said above.
