Strummers & Pickers:

Any Philly Mummer String Band banjosits out there? I need your expertise, please.

I have a tenor banjo and I am trying to learn a particular "New Year's Day" song standard - a Philadelphia Mummers standard" - "Annie From 2nd Street".

I thought the proper tuning for songs like this - and the Mummers' String Band style - was CGDA tuning. I want to verify this tuning for strumming "String Band" type music.

Question #1) IS THE PROPER TUNING "CGDA" or "CGBD" or "GDAE" or DGBD or ......?

Question #2) Which kind of strings would be easier to strum "Steel" or "Nylon"?

I'm dying to try "NYLON" strings.

Loaded Question #3) What style of playing - 5 stringers, 4 stringers, plectrum, finger picking - are Nylon strings appropriate for?

Thank you!

Mike

Try contacting the various websites related to the Mummers association. (btw, I doubt you will find any mummers using anything other than steel strings. I grew up in Reading PA, & saw many parades starting in the late 40's).
