Well, depending on your previous banjo make and model, the BG 150F could compare in many ways. Similar, much worse, or maybe even better. Can you find a music store and try out a Gold Tone 150 somehow? That's the only way you're going to know.

Or reply and tell us what your previous banjo was, and you'll get plenty of free advice.

The BG 150F is a decent quality banjo with a hoop ring. I played one the last time I was in Nashville and was rather impressed with it. A hoop style tone ring can give a nice tone if it's properly set up. If I were in the market for a new banjo, I would seriously consider this one.

Ross Nickerson has a video clip of his playing one on his website, 'banjoteacher.com,' and says it comes with a GT Hardshell case at no charge.

For the same cost, Gold Tone now offers the mahogany with flying eagle BG-175F. Also a rim-shoe banjo with flange plate. For $100 more they now offer the OB-100, their homage to the RB-100. It has a true one-piece flange, plain dot inlay and a headstock reminiscent of 1950s-60s Gibson banjos. Also a sunburst resonator with binding only on the back edge.

As this and other videos show, when set-up well, these hoop-ringed banjos can sound pretty good. They have a character all their own.

I expect to try an OB-100 at Blue Ridge Banjo Camp next week. I'll report back.

Well Thanks so much...I love that BG 175F is mahogany and has the Presto Tail piece. Looks like an upgrade for the same $$ GT...Haven't been able to find any in stock yet. Hopeful soon.

We were told yesterday (August 3rd) by Gold Tone that the first batch of the BG-175Fs are arriving in the states in early September. I'd highly recommend pre-ordering if you want one from the first batch.

How far are you from Titusville?  Might be worth a drive to the GT showroom there.
