There are recordings circulating of Monroe making similar remarks at Bean Blossom and other venues in 1963. Perhaps the most accessible is on the Bear Family CD "July 1963. Two Days at Newport." Monroe sure liked Bill Keith's banjo playing, although he said on several occasions that Steve Arkin played better backup.

Monroe also said it in the concert at Worcester, MA, on the Acoustic Disc CD "Live at Mechanics Hall."

Big Mon had hoped that one of Johnny Rebs boys would’ve got it first , but it was the old Yank “Brad Keith” . You could almost hear the pain in Mr Monroe’s voice as he said it . My how times have changed . There was room for only Bill and so Mr Keith had to assume his middle name . Long live Big Mon and Bill Keith !!

I hope poor ol' Bobby Thompson never heard Monroe talk like that. Or was Thompson a Yank too?
