This London-made W. Temlett 5-string with a 10” rim, model 'Ajax No.2', c.1895 turned up in unusually complete condition and in its original case. This includes what appears to be the original Temlett bridge of a design quite different to contemporary Morley-style or Cole-style bridges.
The original calf skin had split so a replacement calf skin will be fitted ready for recording.
Light finger wear visible up to the 14th fret suggests an owner that was playing a relatively more advanced repertoire.

The serial number is 3064.
My guess is that this banjo has been stored in its case in a reasonably stable environment. There are no splits, though the ebony is quite dry and currently being rehydrated. Thankfully it hasn't suffered any attempt to bodge the neck angle to make it a 'clawhammer banjo'. It retains the original zero neck angle. No sign of fret wear either, which points to never having had steel strings fitted. It is one of a very few vintage banjos where I didn't have to remove the remnants of rusted steel strings from celluloid pegs or machine heads. The full complement of original shoes, screws, hooks and nuts too.
The only missing hardware is the end-bolt. But I have a suitable replacement on its way from Clifford Essex.
