official secret: Washburn brand aluminum rim has a flat spot cast into it where the neck joins the rim .?????? .
I built a rim and neck for somebody who actually paid me fair and donated to me the Washburn with the broken neck and that’s how I learned this. I repaired the neck and she plays again.
That means that it eliminates the need for a jig or shaper to cut an accurate 5” radius round heel!!!
Just an accurate 90 degree tangent cut with a table saw or chop saw or compound miter saw or radial arm saw or even a band saw and or a chisel and mallet if no electricity.
And it means the neck heel angle can be either cut or adjusted in a swing like other new banjos- uh oh ?? and then etc!!
Don’t anybody run off and “big boy” everybody with a patent. This should be shared with all. It saves a bunch of time and trouble.
Tote that charge, lift that jail.
Remember older Vegas and Bacon and Day and even STAMM rims with sideways adjustments? Well……???

I have often imagined a different system for connecting the pot to the neck.
With the exception of the fingerboard extending slightly beyond the end, the neck would be cut flat and perpendicular. There would be a magic piece that fit between the pot and the neck . That piece has exactly the shape of the pot and flange area on one side and is flat on the neck side. It would be a cast piece made of some dense material.
You would be able to buy multiple angles to allow the string action to be adjusted easily just by swapping it out with the different one.
Someone with a 3D printer could probably make a prototype pretty easily for a test.

Yes, the ali rims have a flat spot and some have an elongated hole to allow the neck to move up or down to adjust action. Fine tuning of action is done with the large nut on the lower rod. This compresses or expands the rim like the lower co-ord rod on bluegrass banjos.
I can't remember if the heel of these necks are cut with an angle. Next time I get one in for repair I will measure it.
I used to make rims with flat spots like that for my simple banjos
