Hi all,

I’m looking to sell my banjo as I have not been using it and I am wondering if anyone could help me identify the model and an approximate price (CAD) of what you think I could sell it for? The banjo is in like new condition, only used a handful of times.

Attached are a few pictures.

Thanks!

Mass-produced Asian (likely Chinese). $200 on a good day. Such “bottlecap banjos” are common but can be ok for a beginner.

This appears to be a Fender FB-54. As Bill notes, this is what's known as a "bottlecap" banjo, so named because it integrates the rim and "flange" (as it were) into a single aluminum casting.

These are mass-produced banjos - first in Japan, later in Korea, and currently in China. Manufacturers will put any name and dress desired by the instrument's distributors - hence, banjos that are identical in every meaningful way can carry different marques and somewhat different bling. Fender has always dressed theirs up a bit more, with somewhat nicer "inlay" and often the eagle decal on the back. Fender obviously figured that its brand name made the banjo a bit more valuable to those unaware of the sales process.

This instrument is probably a step up from Fender's cheapest model (the FB 300) but it's still not valuable. Agree with Bill that $200 would be a good price on a good day. Local market conditions vary, but it's not unusual to see similar banjos in the low $100s.

Two of my students have had similar banjos. Although they sounded tinny, they played well and are good or at least adequate starter banjos to learn the ropes on.
