Hey folks, Geoff Hohwald here. I am teaching a free Beginner's Banjo Clinic at the Industrial Strength Bluegrass Summer Fest on Friday, July 17 at noon, Workshop Stage in Building 2 at the Greene County Fairgrounds in Xenia, Ohio.
It is aimed at beginners and people returning to the instrument after some time away: we start with a simple seven-note roll, get everyone locked into the rhythm, and by the end of the hour the room is picking Boiling Cabbage Down together. Last fall we had 20 to 30 folks, most of whom had never touched a banjo, and they were playing along by the end.
And this is not only for the never-touched-one crowd. If you tried the banjo years back and it did not take, come sit in. I start everyone with rhythm and note spacing instead of complicated breaks, and players who quit once usually find this way in feels completely different.
We provide banjos and picks, left and right handed, so bring yourself and RSVP to thebanjowarehouse@gmail.com or 404-218-8580 if you need a loaner. The clinic is free with festival admission, and the weekend lineup is strong: Seldom Scene, Lonesome River Band, Junior Sisk, Po' Ramblin' Boys, and more.
If you are coming to the festival, stop by and say hello. And if you have a mystery banjo from an attic or an estate, bring it along, I will happily take a look at it for you.
Hope to see some of you there.
Geoff
