I play three versions of Bonapartes Retreat in 3 finger style, all in open D tuning (aDF#AD). That incudes the standard country version, with the "Little Egypt" lick, the version of the tune as played by Kentucky fiddler William Stepp, which was borrowed by Aaron Copeland for the score of his ballet Rodeo, back in the 30s, and a version as played by Virginia fiddler Henry Reed. The last is my favorite, but I have heard all three called at jams. I have tabs posted of all three on my website, click the link below and scroll down.
