...... in Travelers Rest, SC. Part of our 250th anniversary of our country's founding. However, her greatest accomplishment was bearing 22 children (most of whom lived to adulthood) including my GG grandmother Mahala Springfield Newby)

i has a much smaller but similar thing with my dad back in the 50s.
r j reynolds was having a tobacco celebration and had this context on the best built tobacco farmer in the triad to be made into a statue,, these statues were to be 35 feet tall and place at the city limits to all main roads coming into winston salem .
any way my dad won... this guy from france came over and made a prototype to go by for the big ones... but for some reason it never came to be and all we had was the proto type.. and it got lost over the years in some executives offices. all we had was the newspaper photo with a model.

That is really cool. My aunt and uncle lived in Winston-Salem and my daughter went to school at Wake Forest, so we have a long history with that area. It would have been neat for your dad to greet all visitors at the city limits. I t would be neat to find the model that was created.
Dicey's ststue was designed a several years ago and the price tag for the life size version was $100,000. As of about a year or so ago, they had only raised a little over $3,000 so I figured it would never be built, so I was surprised to see that it had been finished and erected. I did not know about the ceremony or I would have been there. With 22 children, I am guessing that I am kin to about half the population of Travelers Rest and Greenville County!

with that many descendents probably half north east south carolina showed up !
and from what i have read and researched there was a 50,000 dollars anonymous donation and a 50,000 dollar grant from the South Carolina Society Sons of the American Revolution. so that got the ball rolling i guess.
and besides concerning my dads statue, today anything tobacco related is taboo so they would have taken them down years ago.
