What Bill said and it would make a decent open back 5-string for yourself.

I think that, dished-up like that, the tone ring qualifies to be called a Bacon tine ring. He got a patent for it, implicitly claiming it was different from the Dobson tone ring, which is dished-down. As far as I can tell, they do exactly the same thing.

Of course, that doesn't make it a Bacon banjo. I've got one of those rings in a Deering Goodtime. Sounds nice, but it's the DIY internal resonator that puts it over the top.

That's it. It has a 10 3/4" pot with a birds-eye maple veneer and 20 brackets. It also has the shoe shaped bracket shoes and flat brackets which would tend to make this one 1920s. Later models had hex shaped bracket shoes. I have seen several Slingerland banjos with this type of tone ring. I don't know if they came from the factory that way, or if they were added later.

That ring was used by other Chicago makers, notably Lyon & Healey/Washburn. The Chicago makers were incredibly incestuous in their banjo making. Hard to tell who actually made some of their banjos--no matter how labled.

Didnt just end with banjos, the Chicago makers were swapping parts between Kay and Harmony guitars too.
