Hi all,

Apologies for the lack of knowledge but I have inherited a banjo…. I believe it is a ‘Grover’ and appears quite vintage. It’s not really any use to me so will probably sell it on. The trouble is I have absolutely no idea what it is worth, so was hoping someone could help with a rough valuation before I put it up for sale.

If anyone here is interested please feel free to get in touch.

Hopefully I can add a photo if I can work this forum out!

Thanks in advance!

Grover built tuners and tailpieces, not full banjos.

We'll need at least a few photos - full front and back, closeup of the hardware from the side, and the internal construction in order to identify and appraise it.

There is an Englishman named Warwick Grover here in New Zealand that used to make banjos before he moved here. I have only seen and played one of his. I will try and contact him to see if he did in fact make banjo ukes and advise.

I see there are pictures now. Yes, Grover also makes bridges.

Hi and thanks for replying quickly.

This forum thinks I’m sending spam so blocks my reply’s and photo uploads for some bizarre reason. So I’ll try again!

I’ve found some markings which say JG Abbot London. Are you familiar with this company? The ‘Grover Nontip’ is written on the bridge.

Thanks for your help,

Dan

First …… it’s a banjo uke, but looks like a pretty high quality nice one. However, they do not have great value. Can’t give you a value, but you may be able to find a comparable if you type in banjo uke on Google.

JG Abbott was a maker of fine banjo`s in the early nineteen hundreds, made a large range of banjos from plectrums to ukes. One of our members has posted Abbott catalogues, I think it may be Joel Hooks.

Warwick Grover did indeed make banjos. I believe he may have had a connection with Bill Forster a great picker. They had a small workshop in Coventry which I visited several times to discuss specifications etc.
He made one for me aprox. 50yrs ago which I still have and play daily.
A great quality intstrument.
The banjo pictured is not one of theirs.
Kind regards,
Clive.
