I’m looking for any input on which is a better case.

The Tkl 2.9 Concept linked below has almost no reviews online. I know they’ve been around for a while (early 2000s) but based on some videos from NAMM it seems like they possibly re-released them?

How do they stack up against a crossrock?

I 100% fly with my banjo often and almost always carry it on. I tour professionally and it’s just the nature of the beast. I’d love a second hand Calton, but they’re just hard to find and I can’t justify the price tag for a new one at the moment. I’ve been watching the used market and nothings come up.

I play a 12” Rickard openback that’s currently in a superior ply case.

I can't speak of the TKL or Carlton cases, but I have two Crossrock 11" openback cases for my vintage Vegas. I don't travel by air, but wanted super protective cases for these two banjos and I'm completely satisfied with the Crossrock cases, so much so that I wish I could find one that fits my old National tenor guitar.

The color scratches easily, but to me that seems to go along with the vintage instruments in them. I am happy with them and feel they offer the extra protection I want in the at home and in the back of the car as I drive to gigs.

the tkl concepts are a polymer material exterior. where as the crossrocks are fiberglass (in that price range)
nothing wrong with either ...
they are not a calton case but they are decent.
i was involved on the original design of the crossrock case.. and after many adjustments they finally got it right. great case for the price point. but tkl has always made great stuff too.
i saw the prototype years ago that terry baucom had at a banjo extravaganza we played at and i thought it was very nice.....

if it matters crossrocks are made in china and TKL are made in virginia so thats a tid bit for ya.

Older Canadian-made Calton cases for open back banjos are hard to find.

I have a like-new 11" size Canadian Calton that I found on eBay about ten years ago.I don't need it. It just sits in a closet with one of my banjos snugly inside.
Might be interested in selling it. But unfortunately it is not the size you need.

Best wishes!

I've had multiple bad experiences with TKL cases. Mostly poor fit (too much wiggle room) on a couple of banjo cases. TKL also manufactures the cases for Martin guitars which I'm not impressed with. My D28 came in a case that doesn't close up evenly and actually leaves small gaps you can see through.

I have one Crossrock fiberglass case and so far it's been the best case I've owned. They send some extra padding so you can customize the fit slightly which is great. The powder coating scratches easily. But that's the only negative.
