This is from my pastor, who always starts out his Friday message with something humorous. Incidentally, he is from Glasgow, Scotland and in addition to his accent, they do speel a few things differently!
"National Speeling Bee"
"Earlier this week, the 2026 Scripps National Spelling Bee took place in Washington, D.C. Nearly 250 young spellers competed with unbridled youthful enthusiasm for the Scripps Cup and a $50,000 cash prize.
My own spelling, however, leaves a lot to be desired. I take more than a little comfort from the opinion of Mark Twain: “I have no regard for an individual who seeks to consistently spell the same word in the same way.” My own anxiety over speeling is increased when I consider the words “efficient” and “abbreviate.” Why does “efficient” need two f’s to do the work of one? And why is “abbreviation” such a long word? Clearly my appreciation of the English language has a long way to go."
Not braggin'* .... though it's a l-o-n-g way from Scripps, IIRC I won a couple of our yocal spelling bees: https://www.mhs.mb.ca/docs/sites/makaroffschool.shtml
Somehow I doubt there was a prize every year, but I do recall one [fwiw, a fair bit shy of $50,000] .... it was a smallish ceramic German shepard dog ornament.
* well, maybe just a little bit. ![]()

Chuck, he has been working on it for 16 years. At least we don't have to import a Scottish pastor for our "Kirkin of the Tartan" service that we have once a year.

Well John, I'd never heard of that event, so I looked it up....

All that is correct. The modern celebration is relatively new ..... and makes a nice event. As to the actual inspiration of the reason for the event is a little murky. I'm not sure what "fully banned" actually means, so there may be some truth to the legend. Anyway, it is a neat ceremony. The local Scottish roots are represented by members of the St. Andrews Society here in town ...... mostly made up of our church and other Presbyterian churches in the area.
