I play all kinds of stuff on the Banjo-mandolin...but mostly Irish Trad. Historically, they were used for all kinds of popular music in bands as they are loud enough acoustically to be heard as individual instruments. Standard mandolins just weren't loud enough to be heard by themselves in an acoustic band environment...hard to overwhelm a Banjo Mandolin...they cut right thru.
In early 20th cent. orchestras, the Banjo-Mandolin parts were usually heavy on tremolo.

Ragtime and southern country blues. They are viewed with disdain in bluegrass circles by unimaginative players because they do not sound like or work for bluegrass. Many are converted to 5 string banjos. Old wrecked banjo mandolin are an excellent/inexpensive source for parts for restoring tenor and 5 string banjos of the same era. Love 'em.
