Originally posted by TexasbanjoJust looked up the guy and he has an excellent reputation. However .... here's the caveat: Says he's from Nevada, but is IP is located in.... the Netherlands. Could be legit and maybe his account has been hacked. I'm not sure, but I'll look into it further.
From my efforts w/ the contacts he shows I found the UK & Australia ?? I reminded him that no where in the add does he show or mention Gibson (unless he's since added it) so he sent a pic of the Mastertone decal in the pot which certainly looks legit . It's a lot of banjo for the price IMO if original & he mentioned he was not sure if it was a Bella Voce or a Florentine but settled on a Bella Voce ! (what ??)

BEWARE. I quickly responded to a recent BHO ad expressing my interest in a Gibson banjo which was not pictured. The ad disappeared from BHO soon after I received a response from the seller. Future responses included multiple pictures of a nice 1926 Gibson RB1, shoe bracket banjo, FON 8538-6. The seller avoided my follow-up questions and had no PayPal. Upon my proposal to have a friend meet the seller to make the transaction, the seller immediately advised they had a local buyer. I expect many BHO members know the real owner of the banjo.
I just recently bought a RK-85-SN from the BHO classifieds here. I had a positive experience with my purchase and I feel it is much safer to do business on BHO than it is on ebay. I advoid ebay as much as possible for obvious reasons.
BHO is the safest place to do any banjo business. I may offer some Gibson RB250 parts for sale soon, and BHO is the only place to do such business. I watch the classified ads here daily.

Originally posted by DH#52I once decided not to sell a banjo to a brand new member who joined the day my banjo was listed. Being older and admittedly a little out of the loop on some transaction options, I wanted a check and he pushed for some sort of banking option. I turned him down, he reported me to a moderator saying I didn’t really have the banjo (huh?), and I ended up looking like the bad guy. I had to explain myself to the moderator despite my then ranking of +6 and having been a member for many years. That same guy quit, rejoined under a different name, and I sold it to him for my original demand for a check. I didn’t really want to sell it to him because of the lies he told the moderator about me, but I didn’t want to justify myself again to the moderator.
I’m not sure what my point is, but life used to be simpler.

...."but life used to be simpler.". - I agree with you! Also, on further support of you, If im the seller, I set the terms of payment. Why is that so hard to understand? A buyer can suggest an alternate option but if a seller isn't comfortable, then don't buy it. You obviously don't want it bad enough. don't turn around and whine to a moderator. How childish.
years ago I bought a Deering Crossfire off of eBay, I paid using PayPal…. after I paid for a banjo, banjo wasn’t showing up , I emailed the seller asking what’s up , and he said he shipped the banjo , and provided me with a tracking number … after I waited for another week or so , and still no banjo , I checked the tracking number , and the banjo made a full circle, it went back to the shipper , guy shipped the banjo to himself just to get a tracking number … however, after I file a complaint with PayPal , they returned my money to my account , he then emailed me screaming that PayPal pushed his bank account in red , so there was no money in his account, but PayPal somehow pulled the money out and got his account in red , after that he did ship the banjo , and after I got the banjo PayPal deposited the money back into his account… best thing to do is to pick the banjo up in person … there is a few guys on BHO who I bought banjos from and to whom I trust, and would buy again without a hesitation...couple times I had buyers come over , and pick up banjo in person … I’m very cautious when buying stuff on line , and if I get one little red flag up , I’ll back out of the deal … you can never be careful enough…

I've bought and sold lots of things to do with music and astronomy over the years. You've gotta be sooo careful. Scam artists are everywhere, and kudos for BHO for caring about it. Recently purchased a Cloverlick Foxville on line and had it shipped across Canada ... everything was just fine as described. The seller sent many photos before the final transaction and the packaging was outstanding as well. There are lots of great dudes out here, still :^D.
Wouldn't life would be much simpler if folks were just honest?

"If im the seller, I set the terms of payment."
For a business transaction to succeed, buyer and seller must eventually agree on terms of payment, same as they agree on price. Seller can propose terms, same as seller proposes a price. Terms can be "firm", same as price can be firm, where seller won't change and it's a take-it-or-leave it situation. (Buyer could submit an offer and say "take-it-or-leave-it," too.)
But not all prices are firm, nor are terms of payment all firm. Perfectly OK for buyer to offer different terms of payment, same as offering a different price. Seller and buyer either come to agreement on price and terms and the transaction is made, or don't agree and no transaction.
As a buyer, I'm not forbidden to offer a different price or different terms of payment. Trying to get the potential transaction agreeable to both sides -- that's the only way it can go forward.
I'm a new member of Banjo Hangout, and joined primarily because I have a banjo to sell. Didn't realize that I would be thought of as suspicious because I was "new". I just didn't have a good reason or interest in being in an online banjo forum prior to selling this banjo: banjohangout.org/classified/101479
Weirdly, the ad doesn't even show up in the Banjos section of the classifieds. I guess because I'm not a frequent user of the site. Maybe it's been flagged? Anyone who wants to verify I'm a real person and banjo player can ask Lindsey Liden, Nate Calkins, or Brooks Masten. I can't go back in time and become a long-time contributor to BH, but that doesn't mean I'm a scammer. :)
Well drat. I’ve been a member since 2018 but zero interaction with the community here except for the welcome/introduce yourself exchange. Now, five years later I want to list my banjo but nary a soul here knows me - really, I’m not a snob, just never got started learning to play after breaking my wrist and arm. Bummer.
Would it help to join the Players Union before I list, so that at least whomever is in charge of checking to see if a person is who they say they are, they will then be able to see that I have a credit card in my name used to pay the dues.
Maybe I’m over thinking this, but if I were to buy here I would be very cautious of someone that never posted.
I’d be deeply appreciative of any advice that might come my way.
