More About Me
I am offering banjo lessons (Scruggs and/or melodic style bluegrass is the primary emphasis - but blues, some jazz, other styles can be explored) with an emphasis on helping players learn how to create their own solos and backup to songs, how to figure songs out by ear, and how to apply music theory to make the creation of their own music easier. I can write out tab but emphasize learning by using recordings of the material covered during the lesson, which leads to a deeper understanding of the banjo and a better developed ear. I have lots of playing, recording, and teaching experience, including stints (and gigs) with Sam Hill, Ken Chapple (Ken Chapple Stringband), The Grass Station (with Jered Widman, Jeff Smith, and Josh Adkins), Brian Oberlin, Michael Shay, Zak Borden, Mario Carboni, the Peter Schwimmer Bluegrass Trio, Lincoln Crockett (and Band), Cedar Flats, Dr. Corn's Bluegrass Remedy, the Muddy Bottom Boys, New Old Friends, Train 145, Ida Viper, Small Towne Bluegrass, Front Range, James King, Peter Rowan, Vassar Clements, Jack Cooke and the Virginia Mountain Boys, Del McCoury and the Dixie Pals, Rose City Bluegrass, and others. My rate for lessons is $50 /hour, though a "sliding scale" might be possible if you are unable to afford my going rate.
If you are thinking about taking banjo lessons but don't yet have a banjo, I do have one on hand that you can use during your first few lessons (at the lesson), so you don't have to buy one before starting your study of the instrument.
The above information was written out before the COVID pandemic, so I'm just teaching via Zoom at present. I still teach the same way, but just not in person.
