Jim Reed is an amazing player and even better person. He has more banjo skills than most will ever get the pleasure of experiencing in their life time. You will not meet a more genuine person than Jim and he will go out of his way to help you out. I recommend Jim and feel he is the real deal when it comes to talking banjo. - dgill
I have known Jim just a short time here on the hangout, and am not a bluegrass banjo player but a clawhammer banjo player. Jim has a very smooth "melodic" bluegrass banjo style and a very likeable "easygoing" and encouraging personality. Jim invests lots of his spare time here on the BHO leaving videos with closeups of the left and right hand positions, so essential to learning this style. A "coal-mining man hailing from the hills and hollows of Pike County, Jim is sincerely "A true Kentucky gentleman" 100% and I would recommend him as a fine bluegrass banjo instructor in every sense of the word. - erikforgod
thanks fellows means a lot - jimh269b
Jim Reed will show you how he plays and give you the techniques of smooth, gentle rolls that move gracefully up and down the neck. He'll instill in your hands the melodic sounds that capture the essence of the song and surround it with a genuine mountain banjo sound. His unmistakable style combines bluegrass with old-time music. Jim is the golden nugget of Banjo Hangout and will offer the learner a world of help. - JanetB
Ditto to what Janet said. Taking some lessons via skype with Jim got me thinking about the banjo in a whole different way -- I was doing mostly straight ahead Stanley and Scruggs stuff (still do) but hearing Jim's sound files on the hangout got me chasing after that SOUND! I can't replicate Jim's sound but I can do a whole bunch of things with the 5 that I couldn't before. Thanks Jim! - jbjo
Jim is a great person and a joy to talk to and his Banjo skills are something you have to hear to believe. Jim makes playing look so effortless which he says it is once you learn to let your right hand do the work. I would recomend him to anyone. - rickshunter1
Jim is a wonderful musician who is well known here at the Banjohangout. His ability to play traditional bluegrass and fiddle tunes is nothing short of amazing! Jim has been actively involved in the Eastern Kentucky music world since he began playing as a youngster. Music has always been a part of Jims family and he is warm and personable a musician as one would hope to find. If you are looking for a teacher with first hand experience in traditional music, I highly recomend Jim. - Couchie
