More About Me

October 28, 2024 update: At the current time, I am not taking on new students in order to have more time to deal with some family medical issues. I’m hoping that this will change for the better in 2025. When my situation changes, I will post a new update.

I’ve been playing the banjo since 1969. Most of my professional career was as a university professor (geology, not music) so teaching is something I have long enjoyed, and I have spent considerable time developing approaches that enhance learning. I started offering private lessons in 2017, and have also taught beginner clawhammer workshops at the Rocky Mountain Old-time Music Festival. I teach clawhammer as well as old-timey finger picking styles. All my instruction is personalized--I adapt my experience and methods to the goals of each student, and I make both audio and video recordings for students as needed.

I also have an active YouTube channel (https://www.youtube.com/@banjojack) which has many performance videos with free tabs, and a number of lesson videos.

I met Jack through the Hangout several years ago and we became friends (good fortune for me in my banjo quest). We have kids and grandson's in the Denver area (7 hours south of where we live) and I tried to make sure our visits coincided with Jack's Golden Jam. His jam was comprised mostly of folks who were quite accomplished compared to me but I felt welcome (and overwhelmed) the first time I went and have enjoyed every jam in Golden since then.

Every time I went to his jam, I left a better player. Since our first get together, I've gone over to his place, played with just him and have learned a lot.

Three years ago, though I was beyond the beginner stage by then, I went to his beginner class at the CROMA event at the Parrish Ranch and I was amazed at his teaching ability. Two years ago, I took my friend, Mitch, who is an outstanding guitar and fiddle player and had started with the banjo to CROMA. He's been to many "fiddle camps" (Montana, Oregon and others) over the last 20-30 years featuring many world class players/instructors and he went to Jack's banjo class. He said Jack was the best instructor he's ever had. I went to Jack's class the last two years just for the enjoyment of watching him teach (and I always pick up something new that's helpful for me.)

I think anyone who has Jack as a teacher is really lucky. He is an amazing instructor and player and I'm glad he started teaching others. He's an amazing player and instructor.

I couldn’t be happier taking lesson from Jack. I have had lessons from different instructors over varies instruments and Jack has been excellent, one of the best. I have taken the lessons over Zoom and he provides tabs and video follow up for each tune. Very easy to work with and each lessons has been very rewarding.
Highly recommend!!
