More About Me
I'm offering lessons on playing clawhammer style banjo (also sometimes known as frailing) in the Sheffield area.
This flexible way of playing can be used for everything from solo or lead melody playing to rhythmic accompaniment and beyond. I can teach from beginners to intermediate, and am happy to tailor my lessons around how people want to learn.
I'll teach everything by ear, but I can also cover a decent amount of music theory for those who find it helpful.
I can teach standard pieces from the American old-time tradition, which is where this style of playing was developed and is most often found today. I also play English and Celtic dance tunes on the banjo, and am keen to share technique for less common tune types, such as jigs & slips, 3/2 hornpipes and even 7/8!
In addition to clawhammer, I can cover some fingerstyle banjo techniques (more like guitar style than bluegrass), and plectrum style, which you may find useful to broaden your tonal pallet or tackle different types of tune.
I can also show you how to set you banjo up to get the best sound and playability out of whatever instrument you have, including making sure it plays in tune and that you have a comfortable playing action for your own style.
