More About Me

John specializes in historical banjo styles, primarily the classic fingerstyle (a type of old-time three finger picking) and stroke style. These were the precursors to later 20th century banjo playing including various old-time and bluegrass techniques, and learning them provides an excellent technical and musical foundation for exploring these later styles. Of course, they are great fun to focus on for their own sake and one could spend a lifetime studying them. In addition to these styles, John teaches practical music theory and notation reading, although if a student desires to learn by ear or TAB they will be accommodated. John strives to provide students with a flexible approach to technique that can be tailored to an individual's strengths and preferences.

Comments

Hi John, I enjoy your posts on BHO.
What do you think tonally of the big Vega pots? i have an N tenor, similar to the Little Wonder, converted to a 5 string that has the deepest bass I've ever heard on a banjo. I'm thinking of picking up a Tubaphone big pot and putting a 5 string neck it.
Your thoughts ?
Cheers,
Guy T.
Thanks

Hi Guy,

I generally like big pots better than small pots regardless of the type of banjo. Of course, the scale length needs to be lengthened to compensate for the larger pot sizes, but I don't find longer scale necks to be a problem. I think you'll like how large pot Tubaphones sound. That tone ring design is so powerful that it's really suited to larger pots. If you're after a lot of bass, try and find a 12" Weaver with a tall pot or a Clifford Essex Professional. You'll be blown away.

Regards,
John
