More About Me
Matt Brown is the author of the tablature book Thumb Lead Two-Finger Banjo. He is a multi-instrumentalist specializing in thumb-lead picking and Round Peak style clawhammer on the banjo. Matt also teaches compelling chordal backup to old-time banjoists willing to try three-finger picking, which is way easier than bluegrass. He teaches on Zoom to students worldwide.
Though initially a Round Peak clawhammer player, Matt now also focuses just as much of his teaching time on two-finger banjo picking. Matt taught four levels of two-finger banjo for seven years at the Old Town School of Folk Music in Chicago. That experience led Matt to invest a significant portion of his time during 2020's quarantine to launching twofingerbanjo.com, a site to which he will be adding beginning, intermediate, and advanced lessons for years to come. That site features interviews, performances, and tutorials and is where folks can purchase Matt's new banjo tablature book.
Matt's clawhammer playing is heavily influenced by two main influences: Wade Ward and Paul Brown. Banjo heroes Adam Hurt, Fred Cockerham, and his father, Tim Brown, also inspired him. It doesn't hurt that Matt is a fiddler and guitarist, too, and can offer his banjo students insights from what other members of a square dance band or old-time jam are seeking from the banjoist.

Hi Matt, glad to see you have Paul Brown aboard. Paul taught banjo for me many years ago at Fretted Instruments School of Banjo & Guitar. My best to you and good luck...Jack Baker - Jack Baker
