More About Me
I teach old-time, Appalachian, clawhammer, frailing, three-finger picking, and folk styles for all levels. Learn to play tunes, make arrangements of songs, learn music theory, improve your technique and style. I am patient with beginners -- starting with a good teacher is the best way to develop good habits in your playing.
I played with Long Island Bluegrass Quartet (5 years) and Dance All Night contradance band (20 years).
***Here's what my students say:
*Hi Maria -- I can't thank you enough, the lesson was everything I had hoped. You have a great style of teaching, thank you for going back to the same thing multiple times. -- Dennis
*I came to Maria as a beginner and was quickly taught the basics of playing in a measured but progressive fashion. She gave me a solid grounding in clawhammer technique and banjo setup, steeped in the traditional old-time style, but also encouraged me to explore the instrument's potential to take on more contemporary material. After 2 years things that were difficult have become second nature and I'm having a great time playing with others at jams and festivals. -- Paul
*Maria is a caring and competent banjo instructor who is well prepared for her students. She takes a student-led approach to the repertoire that is studied and breaks down difficulties into small, attainable bites as she models for her students. I always enjoyed my lessons with her and appreciated her patience. -- Gail

Do you still teach banjo? I’m learning Scruggs style and would like to learn how to play backup. I’m in West Islip NY.

I mainly teach clawhammer. There are a couple of people I know who teach bluegrass. I'll get in touch with them to make sure they're currently teaching. I'll get back to you. - Maria Fairchild
