More About Me

My guarantee-I’ll save you hours and years of time on the music journey. My students have told me, “I learned more in this one lesson than I did the last four years”

I teach out of Sandy Springs and Roswell, GA; as well as giving in-home lessons in the East Cobb and North Fulton areas. If you can’t make it in person, technology allows me to reach students worldwide. Online lessons are offered via ZOOM. It’s my goal to help you reach YOUR musical goals.

About Me:
I’ve played at prestigious venues such as Carnegie Hall, The Grand Ole Opry, and the Ryman Auditorium. Past Awards include winning the Merlefest Banjo Contest and 3X winner of the GA state Flatpick Guitar and Banjo Contests.
My extensive training in a variety of musical systems has given me knowledge of both the formal and aural/folk systems.

Testimonials:

“I have been taking lessons with Jody for almost a year now via Zoom(Skype alternative) and it has been the most gratifying experience. I hesitated to take lessons via a computer but it is so much better than taking a lesson in person from someone in my hometown that is a guitar teacher that also does banjo lessons on the side. His knowledge of music, in general, is borderline genius. He makes you feel like you are his only student and he caters your lesson to your needs and likes. He also takes the extra steps to help you learn how to actually play the banjo and not just memorize the songs. I highly recommend Jody and if you are computer challenged as I am please don’t let the fact that you don’t live in Atlanta keep you from using Jody. He is the real deal and I feel blessed that I found him and look forward to many more years of lessons with him.-Kelly

"Jody Hughes is one of those rare musicians who has both expertise on multiple instruments (banjo, guitar, mandolin) and also the ability to effectively teach students. I had struggled for a year to try to teach myself banjo without lessons and was not making much progress. After the first few lessons, I was making rapid progress. Jody knows how to adjust his methods to match your current abilities and then rapidly improve your skills from there. I strongly urge anyone looking for a music teacher to choose Jody Hughes."-Ron C

"Jody gives banjo and guitar lessons to our 8 and 10-year-old boys in our home. He's a great teacher and has a real knack for communicating with them in a way that keeps them motivated. They continue to improve and love practicing as a result."-Earne B

Jody has done wonders for my banjo playing. I am no longer limited by keys and the the whole fingerboard has opened up to me. His system of learning chords is the best I've encountered. If you are looking for a patient and knowledgeable instructor, look no further. - JDsbanjo

I have tried several of those self learning banjo books and DVD's and You tube downloads and I just got confused and would jump from one method to the next trying to find one that worked for me.
I was just about to give up on the banjo when I decided that I need a good teacher and I started a thread "Looking for a teacher". Jody Hughes came to my rescue.
In the first 20 minutes of our first lesson on Skype he had me play a song I'd been learning and pointed out 3 things I was doing wrong that no self learning method could ever teach me.
Also, I'm finding my rhythm. I had it all the time but just needed a good instructor to help me dig it out.
Now I really enjoy my new hobby, the 5 string banjo.

I began playing banjo 12 years ago and after getting frustrated I put it in the case for eight years.
I am at it again and things are going great thanks to Jody. The songs I play are finally sounding like music. I don't know how I would have ever learned the
proper rhythms and accents of this bluegrass music without his instruction. I highly recommend him to anyone that needs an instructor.

Jody is a Godsend when it comes to banjo teaching. The two other instructors I tried only wanted to hand me tabs and send me out the door. I'm finally getting
the hang of this banjo. He is teaching me how to create arrangements and things that can't be found in any book or video on the market. Thanks for everything Jody.

Thank you all for your kind words, it is much appreciated. - Jody Hughes

Hey, Thanks for unraveling this banjo mystery for me! No way I could have learned all these chords without you. - Banjofriend
