More About Me

I've been playing banjo for 42 years, and teaching for at least the last 26 years…I don't quite remember when I started! I teach Bluegrass styles, as well as beginning and intermediate claw hammer. I love the old downstroke styles, but my expertise is really in the three finger picking styles. My education on the banjo came from observing, reading, trial and error, studying, and most importantly from the time I've spent with banjo great Tony Ellis. I played guitar with Tony for about 12 years while his son (who usually accompanies him) was in Japan. I learned some technical things from Tony, but what I learned mostly was his taste and musicianship. And I loved hearing his Bill Monroe stories while we were on long drives. Tony's approach to banjo….his value of melody and touch…and his approach to composition have had profound influence on me, and I view what I do on the banjo and continuing what Tony taught me. I also believe in the value of understanding what you are doing. I've studied music theory pretty extensively and try to guide my students into not just executing tunes, but understanding what they are doing so they know what some of the other options are and can find their own way to play.
