More About Me

I once had a college professor state that the best way to learn was to teach. I have found that very true. I spent several years at the beginning of my banjo career just trying to learn songs. Once I learned just to play, it opened a whole new world. So that is the philosophy behind my teaching, learning the instrument, not songs.

I'm Jaysyn Slayde

I was a novice Banjo student.

Dave is a currently gigging Banjo picker with several recent years experience with a current Tucson AZ band. His approach to teaching 5-string Bluegrass Banjo is based on teaching fundamental skills, and progresses to build a foundation.

He announces group lessons of 5 – 6 students for beginners, in which he teaches 5-string Banjo in an academic style approach. He also teaches individual lessons. I attended one of his 6-student group lessons, which lasted for 6 weeks.

Group lessons allowed me to learn banjo basics with other banjo players for an enjoyable learning experience.

Dave will be showing note for note, how Banjo chord rolls, rhythms, harmonies and melodies are organized, built, and written through tablature. He will teach you how to read and write tablature to get you started on playing right hand picking rolls combined with left hand chords including embellishment techniques like hammer-ons, pull-offs, and slides.

As you progressively learn by reading and writing simple tablature – and then playing them, he will demonstrate and explain all along the way. You will chart and track your progress.

He will explain and show basic Banjo related care such as changing strings, tuning strings, and basic adjustments.

I also have taken lessons from Dave. He ran a beginners workshop, which he titles "banjo Bootcamp". I already play guitar and mandolin and teach a small group of Bluegrass beginners of various instruments. His class enabled me to get a better understanding of the part the banjo plays in a jam or band situation. I've been able to pass along what he taught me to help beginners understand their part and participate in Bluegrass Jams.
Dave has great patience with all his students and I would recommend him to anyone wanting to learn banjo.
