More About Me
I started teaching myself banjo in about 1962. When the Air Force moved me to Sacramento in 1966 I contacted the only music store in the yellow pages that mentioned banjo lessons . I called and met Tiny Moore (he played and traveled with Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys for several years and later was with Merle Haggard for 11 years). Tiny liked my playing and offered me the teaching job since his previous teacher had just moved away. I taught there till the early 1980's. I learned about making and repairing banjos first from Henry Lea in Fair Oaks and then with Larry Lew in Lodi. My brother Monte would visit me during the summers in the early 1980's and he learned how to set up banjos and re-fret and inlay in my spare bedroom. Then he moved back to Wisconsin with my parents and sister and became the head craftsman at Richelieu Banjos in Oregon, Wisconsin. He left there in late 1976 and we moved to Placerville, CA and started making our own banjos under the name Hendricks Banjos. We have made the highest quality banjos. Not one cheap one. We are retiring from the banjo shop soon. I have played at many festivals and even toured Europe and England. I have recorded many radio and TV commercials, hosted 3 radio shows in Sacramento. I was the "in house" banjo player on 2 local TV shows. Anyway, I have been there and paid my dues. I teach people how to play 3-finger picking as that is what enjoy the most. I am just a fellow who loves playing the banjo and has been able to do so successfully for quite a while. I teach at my home in Garden Valley and at my studio in Sacramento.
