Genre: Jazz / Playing Style: 4-String (Tenor/Plectrum)

Steve Caddick is playing this tune. This was recorded at the Early Spring Banjo Fling in 2003 in Mansfield, MA where I was the Headliner. This is my solo tenor banjo rendition of this old tune. It includes the verse which is seldom heard. A bit of trivia for you Boomers, this song was written by June Lockhart's father, Eugene, she played the mom on the 1950's TV show Lassie. In looking at the song style choices, there needs to be one for 4-string banjos!

That is a great tremolo technique! Amazing.

I've never heard the verse played before! Steve, you really caught the true spirit of this tune with your melancholy first part- most folks just go to whacking away (me included), but the song's title really tells it- the song was written in hard times, with hopes of a happy ending. You did it perfectly in playing and spirit. Another 5 stars!

I have been working on this tune for 40 years, it is still a work in progress. I can't seem to get exactly what is in my head and heart to come out my fingers just yet. I'll keep trying until I get it right!

Thanks for the nice comment. I used the Simpson 20 fret Ne Plus Ultra on this one. It is very similar to a Vega Whyte Laydie.
